“Sir, I’m in 12th. Can I still join the Army?” We hear this question almost every week. The short answer is yes. And you have more choices than most students realise.
An after 12th defence career doesn’t run through one exam. You can go through NDA, through a JEE-based technical entry, or through the Agniveer scheme. Which one suits you depends on your stream, your age, your marks and whether you want to join as an officer. Let’s go through them one by one.
NDA: The Main Officer Entry
Most students start with NDA, and for good reason. UPSC holds the NDA & NA exam twice a year, and clearing it can get you into the Army, the Navy or the Air Force.
Unmarried boys and girls aged about 16½ to 19½ can apply. Each notification gives the exact birth-date range. You can apply while you’re still in Class 12.
The part many students miss is that the subject requirement changes with the wing. The Army Wing accepts 10+2 from any stream. The Air Force Wing, the Naval Wing and the Naval Academy need Physics, Chemistry and Maths in 12th.
You start with a written exam that has two papers, Maths and the General Ability Test. If you clear it, you go to the SSB interview. After that come the medical tests, and you also have to meet the physical standards. Always read the current notification on upsc.gov.in. Don’t rely on last year’s rules.
Indian Navy After 12th
PCM students have two officer routes into the Navy. One is through NDA. The other is the 10+2 (B.Tech) Cadet Entry. It needs at least 70% in PCM and 50% in English, and you must have taken JEE Main. The Navy calls candidates for SSB based on their JEE rank. Selected cadets then do a four-year B.Tech at the Indian Naval Academy in Ezhimala. Girls can apply too.
The Navy also recruits through Agniveer. This isn’t an officer entry, and the qualification depends on the post.
Indian Air Force After 12th
If you want to be an officer, NDA’s Air Force Wing is the way in straight after school, and it needs Maths and Physics.
The other route is Agniveervayu. It has two categories. Science students with Maths, Physics and English can take the Science paper. Students from any stream can take the “Other than Science” paper. Both categories have minimum marks in aggregate and in English. After the online test come a fitness test, adaptability tests and a medical exam.
Indian Army After 12th
It’s worth keeping two things apart here: entries that make you an officer, and entries that don’t.
For officers, there’s NDA (Army Wing), which is open to all streams. PCM students can also try the 10+2 Technical Entry Scheme (TES). It needs 60% in PCM and a JEE Main attempt. The latest TES notification took only unmarried male candidates.
Army Agniveer is a separate route, with categories such as General Duty, Technical and Clerk. Some of these need Class 10 and others need Class 12 with specific subjects. It’s a good option, but it isn’t an officer entry.
If You Have PCM, Don’t Skip JEE Main
A lot of defence aspirants treat JEE Main as something for engineering students only. That’s a mistake. Army TES and the Navy B.Tech entry both shortlist on your JEE Main performance. So if you take JEE seriously, you get two extra officer chances on top of NDA.

What If You’re From Commerce or Arts?
You still have options, just fewer. You can apply for NDA Army Wing, Agniveervayu (Other than Science) and the Army Agniveer categories that accept any stream. The NDA Air Force and Naval Wings aren’t open to you. If an entry is closed to you now, graduate-level exams like CDS and AFCAT open up after college.
How Selection Usually Works
Most entries follow roughly the same path. First comes a written test, or shortlisting based on your JEE score. Officer entries then go to the SSB, a five-day process with psychological tests, group tasks and an interview. After that you’re checked against the physical standards and go through a detailed medical. The final merit list is made from these results and the number of seats available.
Where to Begin
Start by checking your eligibility. It sounds obvious, but students do lose a year because of a birth-date or subject issue they didn’t spot in time.
Next, work on Maths and English, because most papers depend on them. Spend twenty minutes a day on current affairs. Once you know the basics, practise with previous-year papers and timed mock tests.
Start your fitness routine now, not a month before the SSB. Running and bodyweight exercises are enough to begin with. And practise speaking. Read the newspaper and discuss it with friends. The SSB is testing how you think and how well you explain your thinking.
